About

Oh hai!

My name is Amy and I’m a food blogger from the East coast of Canada, residing in Halifax, Nova Scotia. I live with my lovely sports fanatical boyfriend and our two rescued dogs, Gambit and Rogue.

I studied Textiles, Drawing and Fashion in school, believe it! I’m a proud graduate of Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD). I have a normal job, with amazing co-workers and a normal life with extraordinary friends.

I love my little family. I have a deep passion for animals (dogs especially), rescue organizations, arts, crafts, textiles and of course, food and wine.

So why the blog?

I have been a Vegetarian for more than half my life and have an incredible passion for food since I was a wee, plump kid. I am in no way a trained chef, I’m self taught and encouraged by my family and friends.

I often get asked for recipes to recreate dishes I’ve made on the fly. As a rule, I  usually do not tend to follow recipes. For me, recipes serve as eye-candy coated bits of inspiration that I tailor to my tastes and what I have on hand at the moment. I started this blog humbly as a way to preserve my recipes and share with friends and family. I’m excited to say it’s grown a bit and I love that I can share with so many people! Join me in my quest to answer the new-age question: What do vegetarians eat?

My Objective

To create a fun and inspirational place for vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike. To showcase vegetarian and vegan foods and recipes with ingredients that are generally available to everyone. I truly believe in supporting and promoting local farms and businesses wherever you live, and because of that I sometimes use ingredients that are not widely accessible, or are exclusive to Nova Scotia. In those cases. I will always try to provide more accessible options and if you have questions please leave a comment!

Why Vegetarian? or Vegan?

I am a Vegetarian (I eat veggies, eggs and dairy) however I try to limit animal products in my life so I often eat vegan (solely plant-source diet). I do not wear leather, and when I use animal products I make sure they are free-range, cage-free, and locally sourced. Even though I do not tend to list it in my ingredient lists, the produce I use is generally all organic and local or grown in Canada. I strive to lead a cruelty-free lifestyle for many reasons. At the core of most of my beliefs, I am a vegetarian for overall health, animal rights and our shared environment.

What do you post about?

I try to be diverse while staying as local and seasonal as possible. You will see an  array of food that stems from everyday eats to more elaborate special occasion foods. Keep in mind, not all vegetarian food is healthy. I do cover recipes ranging from moderate to extremely health conscious as I strive to eat/live well, but I also love to treat myself to super sinful and rich entrees and devilish desserts. It’s about balance people, anyway you want to interpret that.

I always try to incorporate tips and suggestions into my posts that (I hope) may inspire your own creations.

How long have you been blogging?

I started this blog over 4 years ago but have gotten more serious in the past two years so you may notice I am missing photos for some of my posts, or have some inconsistency in the way I write my recipes. I am currently in the process of going through my archives and making changes so I appreciate your understanding as it is a long process.

Blog Mantra

“I’ve found without question that the best way to lead others to a more plant-based diet is by example – to lead with your fork, not your mouth.” ~Bernie Wilke, quoted in Joanne Stepaniak, The Vegan Sourcebook, 1998

    • Hi Amy! I stumbled upon your site this morning as I was searching for Nova Scotia Oat Cakes. I am from Bridgetown & lived in Halifax for over 8 years. I currently live in Frankfurt, Germany. Im so excited to try some of your recipes! I too am a vegetarian (for about 20 yrs now) & have 2 puppies (I tried to make a b’day cake but one of my boys doesn’t like PB?? Any suggestions?). Thanks again for your blog! Have a great day! Meg

      • Hi Megan,

Thanks for the comment. Frankfurt must be an amazing place to live!

As for the pupcakes, pumpkin or apple sauce and a little coconut oil should do the trick. You’ll need some healthy fats and all those ingredients are dog safe.

Thanks for checking out my blog!

  1. Sue sent me the link to your blog, I’m a recent convert to veg-life afer a wake a call from my doctor. Great stuff, thanks !
